Eastern Costa del Sol is a great place to get away from the busy beaches further west, but it's also a great tourist destination all its own-- the resort town of Nerja is located here, with 16 kilometers of white-sand beaches and sparkling waters. Once a small fishing village, Nerja has maintained a lot of its original character, though the town is constantly growing. The center of town, in fact, remains remarkably unchanged. Full of whitewashed homes with geranium-lined windows, the narrow streets of Nerja still feel like the fishing village it once was. Despite the undeniable charm of the city center, the city's most remarkable feature is its famous Balcon de Europa Balcony of Europe, a wide avenue that runs along a towering cliff. . Nerja is on the seashore some 50 kilometres from Malaga on the N340 coastal highway, and marks the eastern tip of Malaga Costa del Sol. Once a sleepy fishing village, the town now has a population of over 12,000. Flanked by a dramatic mountain range, Sierra Almijara, to the east, the town has, fortunately, managed to avoid being blighted by the concrete high-rise scenario which has been the inevitable result of the tourist boom in some of the coastal resorts.
